The reading passage embraces the idea that Glass is one of the significant building materials widely used in different parts of the world. But, it creates some problems for birds owing to the fact that they cannot discern whether it is glass or not and it causes some injuries. So, there are several methods to address this problem. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that one-way glass should be used because people can see out and birds no longer will be able to see inside the buildings. So, it will diminish the number of injuries. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that this is not the whole story because to bird surface of glass reflect just as a mirror and they are not able to distinguish mirror.
The author also points out that thin strips could be painted on glasses and create a colorful design. So, people can still be able to see through the openings. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that this method will include some openings and birds will see these openings as a hole, so, they fly into them. If people make the holes smaller, it will make the building too dark.
Finally, as set forth by the author a powerful electromagnet should be installed in buildings because magnetic fields guide birds away from the buildings. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that birds use magnetic fields only when travel long distances. For instance, when birds fly from a cold weather to a warmer place, magnetic fields help them find the right direction. But in short distances, birds use their eyes and brightness of a light. So, hardly can magnetic fields help birds in long distances.
Having scrutinized all the ideas, a logical conclusion that can be drawn is that there are pieces of evidence ignored by the author while the presence of which could strengthen the author's claim.
