TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task
Glass is an important part of a building, but birds run into glass because they cannot distinguish it from open air. The article proposes few solutions to fix this problem; however, the speaker thinks these solutions do not stop birds from being injured, and refuses each one of the reasons.
First, the article says that buildings should use one way glass because this glass is transparent in one direction, and the bird cannot see the other side of the glass, so they consider it as a barrier that should be avoided; though, the lecturer says that this glass acts as a mirror which is as much as dangerous for birds because they see the picture of the sky or a tree in the mirror, and they cannot understand that the picture is just a reflection of the actual thing. Eventually, they hit the glass.
Second, the article writes that architects can use colorful designs on the regular window glass, in order to keep birds away from the window while people can see through the openings in the glass that are not painted; however, the professor in the audio says that birds try to fly through opening that are not painted because they think it is a way to cross the barrier, and architects should make these opening very small in order to birds avoid them, but it makes the rooms very dark.
Third, the article says that birds have a natural compass to detect earth magnetic field, and building can make a strong magnetic field in order to direct the birds to other directions, but the professor says that birds use this function just for travelling in long distances for example when they travel from a cold country to a warm country. Birds use their eye and brightness of light to fly in short distances.
