In this set of materials, the reading passage suggests three solutions that can keep birds safe from flying through glass windows and getting harmed. However, the lecturer finds all the idea dubious and skeptical and unlikely to help them and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that people should replace the regular glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction. On the contrary, the professor contends that this kind of glass just reflects the light so acts like a mirror which is as bad as regular glass. Birds cannot understand the difference between reflection and reality so they cannot understand that the reflection of sky or tree is not real and fly right toward them. Therefore, this idea cannot be a logical solution.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the passage that if people paint colorful lines on regular glass, birds avoid going through the window. Conversely, the lecturer believes that birds see the space between lines like opening holes and go right through them unless the openings are extremely thin which make indoor too dark. Hence, it cannot solve the problem effectively.
Finally, the reading asserts that an artificial magnetic guides birds to stay away from the glass since they have a natural ability to sense Earth’s magnetic fields. In contrast, the lecturer states that birds use this ability only when they travel long distances. For example, when winter comes they migrate from cold area to warm locations. When they go over short distances they use their eyes and the light. Thus, the magnetic glass will not assist birds.
