Although the author mentions three hypotheses in order to indicate how agnostids, the marine animal extinct 450 million years ago, may have lived, the professor finds them dubious and brings up three counterclaims to refute them all.
Firstly, the author claims that they may have been free-swimming predators as other primitive anthropods which fed on small organisms in the ancient ocean. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt this theory and states that other type of predators which lived before, had large eyes in order to find more preys. However, these animals not only were devoted of good envision because of tiny eyes, but also some of them were blind according to the available fossils. Thus, if they were predators, they should have made use of other means hunting, but there is no proof of this fact through fossils.
Furthermore, the author explains that they may have lived in the seafloor as like as other primitive anthropods did so. The professor, however, opposes that if they were seafloor dwellings, not only they should have lived in the localized spot in which they originated, but also they could not move fast and furious. While they can move fast to farther areas, it is unlikely that they were dwellers of seafloor since other dwellers of seafloor did not have the same behaviors.
Eventually, the reading passage holds the view that they were parasites living on other larger animals like fleas, ticks, and mites. In contrast, the professor believes that the population of parasites were limited because they were supposed to kill and hunt large amount of organisms, however, according to the fossils of agnostids were so abundant, thus, agnostids are unlikely to be parasites.
