The reading passage and the lecture are both about agnostids, a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago, and where they lived or how they behaved. The reading passage brings three area around the world to show how agnostids have lived. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article by providing three decent reasons.
Firstly, the reading passage state that agnostids were free-swimming predators like other arthropods. Although they were small animals there were smaller organisms for them to prey. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He believes that arthropods which preyed on small organisms always had large and strong eyes to be able to attract preys; but, fossils show that agnostids had small and poor eyes, sometimes they were even blind. Therefore, they could not be predators.
Secondly, the reading material states that agnostids were seafloor dwellers like some arthropods and they would have survived by scavenging dead organisms or by grazing on bacteria. This point is rejected by the lecturer. He states that arthropods which were seafloor dwellers did not move fast and typically occupied in some limited area; but, agnostids’ fossils found in a large area that show they could move fast and easily from one area to another one. Therefore, they never could be seafloor dwellers.
Finally, the reading passage says that agnostids were parasites and they might have lived on primitive fish or on other arthropods. This point is refuted by the lecturer. He states that parasites lived within a certain limited population but actually agnostids were lived in very large groups. As a result of this conflict, They could not be parasites.
