TPO-44 - Integrated Writing Task In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to

The reading and the lecture are both about the European silver coin. The author of the reading states that the silver coin was brought to North America by European explorers but there is no clear historical evidence about the coin and provides three reasons for support. However, the lecturer says that it is a genuine coin and refutes each of the author's points.

First, the article claims that Maine in North America is far from other sites. The remains are found in eastern Canada where the coin was found but this does not have the clear connection with settlements. However, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that Norhe America traveled to far distances and brought the silver coin frem Norse settelements.

Second, the text conveys that no other coins were found in the canadian sites. Hence, there is no evidence that the Norse brought silver coins to the North American settlements. However, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that the Europeans brought the valuable coins while there are coming from that site and they carried those coins along with them.

Third, after traveling to north America, Norse have understood that silver coins are useless to the North Americans as they did not recognize silver coins as money. Nevertheless, the lecturer says that north Americans usually like attractive objects and as these are more beautiful they can use them in Necklaces and other jewelry. Hence, they wanted to trade with the Norse.
