In the reading, the author proposes some reasons for supporting the theory that fossil structures were not created by bees. However, the lecturer is critical about what the author asserts and refutes three reasons correspondingly.
First, as put forth by the author, the earliest preserved body of a bees is only as half as old as the fossilized structure discoverd in Arizona. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this reason, mentioning that there should have been a special tree which produces resin to preserve the bees' body adn because these trees began to grow in that area later than the bees, the preserved body of bees discoverd 100 million years later.
Second, the author points out that, bees and plants evolved in close mutually relationshi and since no plant or flower existed in the area untill 125 million years ago, bees coudl have not existed before that time. The author, neveretheless, casts doubt on this reason, metioning that before the appearance of flower and plants in that area, bees could have eat other species such as ferns. With the advent of flowers they have been evolved and adopted to the new food.
Third, as it has been claimed by he author, the fossilized structures lack spiral caps which is a vital part of moder bees's nest. While the lecturer does not consider this reason plausible and posits that chemical evidence found by scienctist suggest that the material ancient bees may have used for bulding a nest is a water-proof material which is quite distinctive from the modern bees.
