In this set of materials, the reading passage explores the reasons that animals were larger in the past than they are today, and the professor's lecture deals with the same topic. However, he casts doubts on these reasons, and in the lecture, he provides three specific points to substantiate his opinion.
First, although the reading passage suggests that those animals were living in an oxygen-rich environment where they could grow larger, the professor argues in the lecture that there was actually less oxygen in the past than nowadays. This is because the atmosphere consisted with poison gases which were harmful for breathing them, not to mention using them for growth. Clearly, the professor's argument refutes its counterpart in the reading.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that there were sufficient plants on the early earth, the professor asserts that even though it is true that the food supply was abundant, those foods contained little nutrients. He supports this point with the fact that according to fossil records, plants were scares since they relied on carbon dioxide for producing energy yet there was not enough carbon dioxide for plants.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that warm weather stimulates growth, the professor contends that evidence has found that smallest people usually dwell in warm climate instead of the largest one. Then he explains that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that humans with large body size have poor ability of regulating body temperature; as a result, cooling off their body temperature in order to adapt warm condition requires consuming more energy, which will be used for releasing temperature rather than for growing.
