The lecture apparently disproves the reading passage from various aspects. The lecurer contends that, although the three advantages of electronic medical records claimed by the passage seems acceptable, there are still uncertain in some occasions. That is to say, the claims in the passage suffer from several flaws which are presented below.
The flaw of the first claim is that the reduced costs will not be so significant even if the electronic medical records are put into use. According to the lecturer, doctors will still keep using the paper records in some emergency situations. Also, the signatures on the paper records have more legal effects than the electronic one. Therefore, doctors will still pay for storage space for paper records.
The problem of the second claim is that most doctors will still use paper records when examining patients. There will be some staffs in the hospital to help the doctors to transfer their handwriting records to electonic records. In this way, they may still make errors during the interpretion process even if they use the electronic records.
The weakness of the third claim is that the US has a strict privacy law to keep electronic medical records secret if the patients want. Accessing to these electronic medical records can be extremely hard for researchers because the process to obtain the permission is strict and complex. The patients can even block use of their electronic medical records to anyone except the hospital.
