The passage proposes three benefits regarding the switch from paper based to electronic medical record systems, unfortunately all of which were questioned by the lecture.
First off, the professor in the lecture does not believe that relying on electronic records is going to help save space for storage, because doctors still keep paper records as emergency back up with electronic records widely used. Meanwhile, paper records and signature are also important in potential legal disputes. Consequently, they still pay for the storage cost.
Second, that electronic medical records can reduce the chances of errors is dismissed by the professor as well, and errors generated from poor handwriting and improper transcription might still arise. In her view, doctors always take notes or write prescriptions on paper and then it is their staff that later enter the information into electronic system. As a result, inevitably, they may still find doctors’ handwriting illegible and misinterpret them.
Last, the professor argued that is still hard to take research although electronic medical records is easy to draw out information and access. Her main concern comes from the privacy law, which indicates that doctors must follow strict procedures and regulations in order to exploit patients’ data. Under the law, patients reserve the rights to block any external access to their personal medical data if they wish. Thus often the researchers are not granted the use of patients’ medical information.
