TPO-47 - Integrated Writing Task Pterosaurs were an ancient group of winged reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs. Many pterosaurs were very large, some as large as a giraffe and with a wingspan of over 12 meters. Paleontologists have long wondered

First of all, the author points out that the Pterosaurs were cold blooded. It is mentioned that cold blooded animals usually have slow metabolism and usually do not have enough energy to fly. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the people discovering fossils, saw that the fossils of Pterosaurs all had hairs on them. This means that the Pterosaurs were all warm blooded. Furthermore, she argues that warm blooded animals usually do have enough energy to fly and flap wings.

Secondly, the author contends that the Pterosaurs were usually all very large and heavy. The article notes that Big and colossal animals are usually too heavy to support themselves when flying. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that the Pterosaurs had anatomic features. Their bones were hollow making them very light. The hollow bones allowed them to be light enough to fly.

Finally, the author states that most flying mammals, have strong hind legs. The article establishes that large Pterosaurs would have needed to have very strong hind legs, like birds to be able to get off the ground. The lecturer on the other hand posits that not all flying animals used only hind legs. Some, like bats used all four legs. Pterosaurs also used all legs to push themselves off the floor.
