The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is whether it is beneficial to use electronic medical records systems in the United States or not. Considering this, the author mentions some reasons to support the idea of using electronic records. The professor, on the other hand, unequivocally challenges whatever contended in the reading by posing some problems.
First, both the professor and the author talk about reducing costs. As claimed by the passage, paper-based storage systems for medical records require some space which cause some expanses. Also, transferring paper records could be another probable cost. The lecturer, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explains that doctors who use electronic medical system keep paper records as an emergency backup so that the cost of storage doesn’t reduce.
Second of all, both the lecture and the passage discuss errors. The passage goes on to mention that electronic medical record systems reduce human errors such as illegible doctors' handwriting. In contrast, the lecturer explains that doctors use paper and pen for writing records while examining patients. An office staff transfer paper records to electronic ones so that the human error for reading records have still existed.
The last point discussed in the passage is that electronic medical records can be a useful tool for researchers because all data are accessible. However, the professor rejects this by declaring that accessing patient medical records is somehow difficult because researchers should follow the strict rule about privacy. they can use patients' records, if they have the patients' permission. Perhaps, patients do not allow researchers to use their records. As a result, accessing electronic records is not so easy.
