TPO 49 - Integrated writing

The reading and the lecturer both are about the how humpback whales navigate when they migrate long distances. The reading provides some evidence that shows humpback use stars to navigate. In contrast, the lecturer casts doubt on the reasons are mentioned in the reading by providing three outstanding reasons.
Firstly, the author claims that humpback whales are intelligent animals due to the level of complexity of their brains; therefore, they utilize their cognitive abilities to look night sky for orientation. On the other hand, the professor rejects this point. He states that there is no real connection between intelligence and cognitive ability. For instance, some animals such as ducks have the cognitive ability since they born, but they have an average level of brain complexity and intelligence. Hence, there is an unreliable relation between these two mattes.
Secondly, the reading says that humpback whales migrate in straight lines and they just change their routes when they sense some barriers; also, there are no landmarks in the ocean to help them in navigation. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this point and he believes that the humpback whale’s body produces a substance called bio-magnetic. This substance makes the humpback whale able to sense the magnetic field of Earth as do some birds. Thus, humpback whales may use magnetic filed rather than stars in the sky for navigation.
Finally, the reading believes that humpback whales have an unusual behavior called spy-hopping which humpback whales look upward for minutes at a time. They behave like this in order to see stars in the sky. Nonetheless, the lecturer challenges this reason. He says that other marine animals such as sharks have this behavior, however, sharks never migrate. Sharks just do this for looking prey in sunny days, not in nights. Therefore, this explanation is a poor speculation.
