In this set of the materials, the author of the reading passage discusses three hypotheses of humpback whales may be navigating by the stars to migrate long distance. However, the professor thinks the author's theories contain defects.
First of all, the author claims that humpback whales are smart enough to develop their cognitive ability, and this ability can let humpback whales observe night sky to orientate. On the contrary, the professor indicates that connections between the intelligent and cognitive ability are not related. Professor uses the ducks as an example, ducks don't have highly intelligent, however, the ducks have cognitive ability to orientate. In fact, it about the instinct instead of the intelligent.
In addition, the author states that humpback whales use the stars for external signs to maintain direction over long distances. However, the professor asserts that the humpback whales have the internal bio magnitude can sense earth magnet. Therefore, the whales are able to migrate long distance due to the earth orient field.
Finally, the author raises the point that humpback whales have an ability called spy-hopping. Humpback whales can look at the star for information to navigate. On the other hand, the professor refutes the author's idea by saying spy-hopping is not related to looking at stars for navigating. Using the sharks as an example, sharks have an ability of spy- hopping. However, sharks don't migrate, they use this ability to hunt other animals. Furthermore, the humpback whales do spy-hopping always during the day. They can't ever see the star in the daytime. Therefore, spy-hopping for navigation is the only speculation.
