The topic of the reading passage and the lecture is navigation of humpback whales. The author claims that these whales use the stars for navigation, while the professor completely denies the points in the reading and provides several reasons.
First of all, the passage claims that these animals are enough intelligent to navigate by stars. The lecture, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that there is not a relationship between the intelligence and the navigation ability. Furthermore, he provides an example about the dogs and the birds; he illustrates that although, the dogs are more intelligent than birds, however, they do not migrate.
Secondly, both the passage and the lecture point to the migration of these wales are along certain lines. The author states that these whales migrate along the star lines. The lecture rebuts this argument and suggests this migration occurs along the magnetic field of the earth. He elaborated on this by mentioning that there is a material in their body which is called Biomagnetic; that exists in the body of the birds that migrate by the magnetic field of the earth.
Finally, the author goes on to mention that there is an unusual behavior in these wales. He illustrates that they put their heads on the water toward the sky, hence, they are looking to the stars for navigation. Nevertheless, the professor supports a contradictory view as compared to that of the passage. He demonstrates that other animals like Sharks have the same behavior but, they do not navigate.
