TPO-50 - Integrated Writing Task

Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses traveling to Mars, which is located 150 times further away than the distance between Earth and Moon. The author states that since traveling to Mars is not as easy as the Moon missions, there are several viable problems which should be solved before the Mars mission is started. That being said, the lecturer provides several solutions to repudiate these problems.

Initially, the writer says that because of taking much more time during the Mars mission than the Moon one, astronauts will be faced with survival materials' shortages, which are caused by low capacity of spacecrafts. However, the speaker explains that this problem can be solved only by using Hydroponic, which makes plants able to grow in water instead of soil. By this strategy, astronauts can cultivate food crops which result in absorbing CO2 and emitting O2, and supply the required Oxygen for astronauts. In addition, Hydroponic can recycle waste water and change it to clean water vapor, which astronauts will need during the mission.

Second, the author proclaims that astronauts should do their activities in zero-gravity environment for a long time, and it results negative effects on their bodies. Yet again, the lecturer underscores that during previous experiments, many astronauts learn to use several techniques regarding solving this problem; regular exercises and eating vitamins and minerals like calcium can destroy threats for muscles and bone densities, respectively.

The final point of contention between the reading and the listening passage is space radiation. The writer thinks that released particles by the Sun can put the astronauts and their spacecrafts in danger, owing to the fact that they cannot use a shield, which ensues increases in weights, to be protected against the problem. On the other hand, the speaker explains that solar radiations occur occasionally, whenever the Sun is in its active period. She underscores a logical solution, in which spacecrafts can use special instruments to monitor the level of space radiation, and also have a protected area which can be used whenever the monitor shows any increase in the level of radiation.
