TPO 50- Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.
The reading and lecture are both about mission of astronauts to Mars. The author of the reading believes that this mission is impossible and three reasons of support are stated. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented. She says that the mission in Mars is challenging, but scientists proposed three solutions to the problem.
First of all, the author points out that round-trip to Mars is going to take two years. It is mentioned that it is impossible to do because food supply, water, oxygen and cargo space are limited. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that food supply can be solved by hydrophonics, a technique which uses water to grow plants without the use of soil. Moreover, she argues that hydrophonics needs little space and can cultivate food crops in the spacecraft and can recycle the water as clean water vapor which are used as drinking water. Also, the plants can absorb carbon dioxide in the air and as a result can provide fresh air in the space craft.
Secondly, the author contends that Mars has zero gravity. The article notes that it has negative effects on the overall health of the astronauts such as decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that astronauts spends a lot of time in zero gravity and learned to combat hazardous effect on their body. Furthermore, she elaborates on this by mentioning that regular exercise can reverse the effects of decreased muscle mass and lower bone density on their bodies. In addition, religious intake of vitamins and minerals can help to strengthen their health.
Finally, the author states that astronauts are exposed to high levels of radiation. The article establishes that a having a shield on their space craft is improbable because it adds to much weight on the vehicle. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that solar radiation do not pose a danger all the time. She puts forth the idea that solar radiation are occasionally released when the sun are active and there are equipment to detect high level of solar radiation. Astronauts can detect high level of radiation with this small gadget and they can go on the shield if high levels are detected and they can be protected.
