The lecturer and the reading passage offer three opposing views on the possibility of sending humans to Mars. Although there are some reasons stated in the reading passage which cast some doubts on the probability of this travel, the lecturer states some reasons which support the idea of sending humans to Mars.
First, the lecturer says that there are some plants called Hydroponics which can be cultivated in water instead of soil. While it is mentioned in the reading passage that the trip to the Mars would last about two years and the capacity of space vehicles is not enough to bring large amounts of food, water and oxygen, the lecturer states that the Hydroponics recycle water and produce a large amount of drinking water and also these plants release oxygen which helps astronauts survive. So, by cultivating these plants in water this problem will be solved.
Next, the lecturer asserts that there are several astronauts which have lived in zero gravity situations for a long time owing to exerting some techniques. Although it is stated in the reading passage that zero gravity circumstances adversely effect on human body and make the trip difficult, the lecturer says that there are some exercises which help the astronauts manage this severe situation by adapting their muscles and bone to tolerate negative effects of zero gravity.
Finally, the lecturer claims that some space radiation are not dangerous all the time and they can harm astronauts just when they are active. Hence, she says that astronauts should utilize an instrument to monitor the space radiation and determine the time they are active. While it is mentioned in the reading passage that constructing shield would add surplus weight to the ship, the lecturer asserts that astronauts should install a small shield on their ship and just use it when the monitoring system indicates the dangerous situations.
