Because of climate change, more and more land that was once used to grow crops or provide food for animals is turning to dry, unusable desert land. There are many proposals about how to stop this process, known as desertification. A number of proposals involve growing trees, because trees can help protect soil and provide many other benefits to fight against desertification. Some scientists have proposed that the best way to grow trees in dry areas in danger of desertification is by using a box-shaped device surrounding the young tree. The device collects water that condenses from vapor in the atmosphere and helps the tree to grow. However, other scientists believe that this device will not be successful in fighting against desertification for the following reasons.
Embeding a box-shaped device to maintaine young trees from harsh evironmental conditions is argued in the text. But, there are some persuasive reasons to use this method:
According to the passage, each box cost 25 dollars and, millions boxes are needed to complete desertification process. It means that most of the countries which are in conflict with this problem could not afford such a huge expense. As a justification, when the tree grow up, the box can be used for other young tree, even twenty times. So, the total expense sounds so resonable by dividing the expense to using times.
It is true that protecting from the trees is not the local people's concern because, they prefer to pay attention to useful plants which would be the food sources for them. By the way, they could be persuaded by making them aware of other benefits. For instance, some of the boxes could be used to store water for growing other plants; On the better word, the local people should be permitted to use boxes in their farmlands. Thereby, their time would not be wasted and, the trees would grow up. Moreover,
the broken boxes are used as wood fires.
The containers or the boxes, could not be sufficient if the trees grow up. They have been designed to supply enough water for a young tree unless they are designed bigger which leas to more cost. The trees' roots would be spreaded deeply as well as the trees grow up; So, the roots reach to the moist soils beneath of the dry soils and, the needed amount of water could be absorbed
from underground
