The lecture and the reading both discuss the invasion of the zebra mussels. The reading states that the invasion of the zebra mussels cause a serious threat to the fish population in all North America, The invasion is hard to control, and enumerates three reasons of support. However, the lecture refutes. It claims that there are many methods to control the invasion of the zebra mussels.
First of all, the reading argues that the invasion of the zebra mussels is unstoppable, because it caused by human activity. Moreover ships responsible for spreading out the mussels. The lecture disagrees. It claims that in the past people had not enough knowledge to control the spread of the mussels. According to the professor, today people are able to control the mussel’s invasion by requiring the ships to empty the ballast water near the ocean, which caused the mussels to be killed by the salt water. .
In addition, the reading claims once the zebra muscles are carried to any habitat can dominate it. For example, first when the mussels are moved to the North American ocean, the mussels have no habitat there. However the lecture opposes this point by saying that in the beginning there will be no predator, but after that the local aquatic birds will know that there is new kind of food. The birds would eat a lot of the mussels. Consequently the mussel’s population will decline.
Lastly, the reading makes an argument that the zebra mussels compete with many fish for there food. However, the lecture disagrees. It claims that it is true that the zebra compete has a negative impact on the some fish population. But, there are other kinds of fish the get positive impact from the zebra mussel’s invasion, such as the bottom fish, which increase in number because of the zebra mussels.
