The article claims that marine mammals their name is seller’s sea cow were extinct and the article provides three theories to support the claim. However, the professor explains that we do not know the exact reason of the extinction. The professor also refutes each of the theory has a problem.
First, the reading states that over hunting of the sea cow is the main cause of their decline. The author of the reading mentions that the Siberian people found the sea cow as a good sources of food during harsh environment, so they started to over hunted, which lead to the extinction of the sea cow. The professor refutes this point by saying that the sea cow has a massive weight and it is about nine meter long. The professor argues that a couple of sea cow will feed the Siberian population for a month, so the Siberians were in no need to over hunt the sea cow.
Second the article claims that the disturbance in the ecosystem cause decline in the sea cow population. The kelp which is the main sources of food for the sea cow decreased due to the disturbance in the ecosystem which leads to decline in the sea cow population. However, the professor refutes this point he mentions that there was no experience of food shortage at that time. The professor argues that if the disturbance in the ecosystem occurred at that time it will not only cause decrease in the kelp population but also will cause decrease in the whale’s population, and there were any report in whales decline.
Third, the reading avers that European fur trader is one of the main causes in the extinction of the sea cow population, last cow caught by them on 1768. Yet, the lecture disagrees. It claims that the numbers of the sea cow were already low before the arrival of the European. The professor also mentions that soon after the arrival of the European the sea cow extinct. Till now the main cause of the sea cow extinction is unknown.
