The reading and lecturer are about Genetic modification which is a new approach and with the help of change of an organism's gene, it can create the trees with fast growth and more fruits. The article provides three reasons to support this method. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading and finds all of arguments unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that Genetic modification will cause the new trees to resist in front of harmful damages in comparison with unmodified trees such as a new pest-resistant papaya tree in Hawaii which is resistance in cope with a ring spot virus. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She points out the natural trees have adapted to survive in any condition for many years. For instance, unmodified trees can tolerate changes of climate or different types of insects; however, modified trees have been designed for a specific circumstance and they will not be able to bear unpredictable conditions.
Secondly, the article contends that since genetic modification trees can grow quickly and provide a large number of fruits; therefore, these types of trees can be cost-effective; conversely, the professor expresses that it is true that modified trees would grow in a few years and produce more products but gathering their seeds or fruits requires much cost because they need to hire more workers for this task, so it cannot be much effective.
Finally, the reading passage states that nowadays, wood companies are cutting down natural trees for building material or wooden products; hence, the natural trees may become extinct. Yet, with the aforementioned approach, wood companies will attempt to employ modification trees because as I said before, they grow quickly and as a result, natural trees can be protected. This argument is rebutted by the professor and she poses that genetic modification trees grow aggressively; consequently, they can compete for light, soil and water with natural trees. In such frustrating condition, they may prevent from access of natural trees to needed resources for growth.
