In this set of materials, the reading passage states that the zebra mussel has been spreading out from its original habitats and there is no way to stop this invasion. However, the lecturer finds all idea skeptical and refute them all because he believes that it is not a serious threat.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that ships are carrying zebra mussel from the original habitats and passing them in waterways. In contrast, the lecturer argues that people did not have enough knowledge in the past because they released the water,full of zebra mussels, in some new habitats. So, if they be required to empty this water in the ocean and fulfill the ships with fresh ocean water, the salt of ocean will kill zebra mussels and they cannot colonize.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that zebra mussels can dominate a new habitats right after reaching it. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that this statement is correct just at the new beginning. He explains that some new predators like birds can switch from what they were eating before to eating zebra mussels. Hence, the population would become balance.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that there is decline in the overall fish population because of the food compete. Conversely, the lecturer claims that the negative effect of zebra mussel is just on those species which eat planktons. In fact, zebra mussel has advantages for bottom fishes which eat zebra mussel. Their population would be increased after the growth of zebra mussels.
