The listening and the reading materials have a debate on source of vague sounds that are heard by sailor in Russian submarines patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. The writer puts forward 3 main hypotheses, which are refuted by the following speaker.
Firstly, the writer suggests that orca whales produce special sounds like "quackers" when they mat. While, the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. She explains that these whales live near surface but the submarines move in deeper place of ocean, So it is undetectable to hear orca's sounds in that place.
The second preposition offered by the writer is that living huge squids in deep part of ocean produce sounds which may be cause of this strange sound. However, the speaker casts doubt on this assumption by saying that the mentioned sound had been exist during years between 1960 to 1980 and after that time it has been disappeared. As a result, having no result to stopping the sound by squids, it can not be related to them.
Last, the writer proposes that the sound may be due to another country's submarines. These submarines may have mysterious mission and high level of technology that are not detectable by sonar equipment. On contrary, the speaker holds an opposite view. She claims that sound's direction change so quickly, and until now, we do not have such a technology which can alter sound's direction so fast. Thus, the argued sound can not be due to foreign submarines.
