In the passage, the author mentions that an asteroid, instead of moon and mars, would be best option for colonizing and brings up three reasons to support it. However, the professor contends that the reasons are not practical and each of them has a downside.
At first, the passage holds the view that asteroids have lower gravity, which making the landing safer than landing on moon and mars and also it would be easier for space craft to take off again. The professor, on the other hand, believes that the low gravity presents some risks. Consequently, people will lose muscle mass and will have lower bone density. Astronauts who spend months in the space suffer from this diseases, as well.
Additionally, the writer mentions that some asteroids are reach in valuable elements and metals, such as gold and platinum, which are rare on the Earth. Therefore the colonists or businesses sponsering them could more than pay for cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth. Nevertheless, the lecturer states that this is not a whole picture and there are additonal cost for colonies and transporting them. Moreover, the price of these items wouldn't remain the same, since mining in large quantity would increase the supply and consequently the prices will fall.
Finally, the author suggests that some of asteroids are very easy to reach, since they periodically come withing or near Earth's orbit and some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. On the contrary, the professor points out that it is not always easy return from asteroids. This due to the fact that orbits are unusuall, they may be close at first but then move away from the Earth. In fact, they are close in one point, but they don't stay there and may even go farther than Mars. As a result, it would be challenging for spacecrafts to return to Earth.
