Both reading and writing discuss about ways to decrease the salinity of the Salton sea in California. The authors bring up some solutions for this issue. However, the professor states some reasons that cast doubts on this view.

First, the reading states that one solution is to remove salt from the lake by evaporating and then cooling down the pure water, but the lecture disagrees, stating that by doing this, the chemicals that remain by evaporating is health-risky and when wind spread this material and people breath it, it could be hazardous because the material can be toxic.

Second, the articles say that another solution is to add water from the pacific ocean to the lake since that water is 20 percent less salt. Again, the professor explains that the construction cost will be a fortune and government cannot afford it.

Third, the passage asserts that some walls can be built in order to separate the lake into parts. The amount of salt in smaller parts can increase in comparison with bigger parts. In contrast, the lecturer rejects this view and mention that this lake is located in a place which earthquakes frequency happens. For this, in the long term this wall will collapse and therefore, this idea will just be appropriate in the short run.

In conclusion, we can see that although the reading passage argues several solutions that seem to be instrumental, the lecturer points out some serious drawbacks to this proposition.
