The reading presents three theories to explain why the 52-hertz whale sings at such a high pitch. However, the professor dismisses all of these theories by claiming that they all have certain flaws.
First, the professor thinks the 52-hertz whale is unlikely a hybrid since its migration pattern is too unusual. To specify, even a hybrid’s migration pattern should be the same as non-hybrid whales because hybrids just travel together with normal whales. However, by listening to the location of the 52-hertz song, scientists have been able to determine that it does not migrate alongside other whales but migrates alone.
Second, the reading suggests that the high-pitch sound may connect with a damaged sense of hearing by raising the example of people who are born deaf. On the contrary, the professor says deafness cannot explain the extremely high pitch. Just like humans sound actually originates from the physical structure throat, an unusual high-pitch sound should come from an unusual throat structure. Therefore, it has nothing to do with hearing, let alone a damaged sense of hearing.
Third, the reading proposes that the 52-hertz whale may be the only known member of a rare species. By contrast, the professor casts doubt on it by adding a fact that even if the 52-hertz whale was from a rare species, it should also have had parents who produce the same high-pitch sound. However, advanced technology has been put underwater for several decades, but has never heard of any sound from its parents, which rules out the possibility of the 52-hertz whale being a member of rare species.
