tuna farming concerns

Essay topics:

tuna farming concerns

The passage presents some concerns regarding the inefficiency of tuna farming in ocean cages. The lecturer, however, disproves the claim that they are valid points, and he mentions practical solutions that have been proposed to resolve each of these issues. His further demonstrations are follows.

Firstly, while it is true that currently Tuna farming relies on catching young wild tuna and growing them until they are ready to be sold, new research shows that in near future this limitation can be resolved. Scientists have realized that by injecting the female tuna with hormones, the fish would lay eggs readily. Additionaly the injection has been proven to not be detrimental for the Tuna or its future consumer. Thus, this approach prevents the further decrease in the wild tuna population.

Secondly, although today the nutrition source of tuna farms mainly consists of high-protein fish-based food, which is significantly costly, the required protein in the diet of the tuna can be obtained from plants. By utilizing protein that is present in plants, the nutritional needs of tuna would be fulfilled in an inexpensive way. Therefore, tuna farms can be presumably profitable.

Finally, the reports from the tuna farms off the coast of southern Australia indeed show a parasite infestation. Nevertheless, scientists have suggested possible ways to overcome this challenge in the area. For instance, in the case of blood flukes, it is speculated that moving the tuna farms farther into the ocean causes a considerable decline in the number of blood flukes, since the materials they need to thrive are present in water adjacent to the shore. Hence, there are applicable scientific means to avoid parasite infestation in tuna farms.
