Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

The reading and the lecture are about the policy regarding the four day work week for employee. The passage support the four day work week by providing three supporting ideas. However, the professor says, these policy will rather exacerbate the company as well as its employee. He refutes each of the reading claim.

First, the article asserts that the shortening of work weekday will benefits for the company by aggregating revenues. But, the lecturer denies this idea. Apart from that he delineates that the four day work week will do the same cost for company because they needs to provide employee training and ensuring medical benefits. In addition, they have to use money for buying computer and office space for the employee. So, the profit will not overrun to the cost of spending.

Second, the reading states that the lessening work week might create a lots of job and it will reduce the burden of unemployment. However, the professor refutes this supposition. Conversely, he describes that as the hiring worker costly so the company try to ensure overtime of work from the four day work employee what they have done to work five day work week. For this reason, the possibility to open work availability will be blocked.

Third, the written excerpt claims that for working four day work the employee will have more time to spend their family, leisure activities and also ensure their further income space. The point is quite incoherent with the narrator position. On the other hand, he explains that it will rather put a lots of risk for individual employee because their quality of life will dwindling, decrease their job stability and more importantly it will cause to lose their job during economic downturn faster than their previous work week schedule. Moreover, it will create a less chance to get their promotion.
