In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The reading is talking about three benifits of working for four days a week with less payment rather than working five days per week. These benefits are foe the company, the employee, and the country. In response, the professor says that these benefits will not be in the way that the article mentioned.
To begin withe, the reading clams that the profit of the company is going to increase because employees would feel more rested and alert which means there will be less costly errors. In contrast, the lecture says that the profit will not increase because if they apply the four days regimen, they are going to need more employees, which means more expenses such as costs for training , office spaces, computers and medical benefits; that are fixed regardless the number of working days.
Second, the reading says that the rate of unemplyment will decrease if compnies offer a four days working way, and this is a great thing for the country. According to the professor, it will not happen. As he said before, hiring new worker is costly, so companies would prefer to go for other options like working for over time. In the other hand their expectations are going to increase; they want the same amount of work in those four days without any additional workers, which is unpleasent for employees.
Finally, the reading illustrates that with four days working, people's quality of life will increase because they will have more free time with their families. However, the professor opinion is that these individuals are going to have a negative effects on their life. Their work stability will decrease, and they will be affraid of losing their jobs.
