In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
The reading and lecture are both about the decision to choose four-day work a week. The author of the reading feels that this would be helpful for the employees as well as for the economy of the country. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. he is of the opinion that this system does not provide any benefits to the people and to the country.
To begin with, the author argues that four-day work will increase the productivity of the employees. The article mentions that as now they will work for less time they will get plenty of time to relax, which will increase their productivity and they will stay more alert while performing their task, which will increase company profits. this specific argument is challenged by the author. he claims that this system will cost company more rather than being beneficial for the company. Additionally he says, this system will make the company to recruit more employees meaning that company needs to spend money to give them health benefits like other employees and need to construct more office space. Hence, costing the company more money than profit.
Secondly, the writer suggests that unemployment rate will decrease in the country. In the article it is said that as the four-day employee will only work for four days then the company would require people who can work for the remaining of the days. this will make the company to hire more people, hence reducing the unemployment rate. The lecturer, however rebut this by mentioning that this system will affect the employees costly. he elaborates on this by bringing up the point that in order to avoid hiring more people company can force the current employees to work over time and the expectations of the company would increase from their workers as they will now expect the five day work to be completed in 4 days. All this thing will cost severely to the workers of the company.
Finally, the author posits that this system will improve the life of the worker. Moreover, in the article it is stated that by working for lesser time they will be able to spend more time with their family, which will improve the lifestyle of the workers. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that rather than improving the lifestyle of the workers it will be harmful for their careers. he notes that this will risk their job stability as they can be the first one to lose their job if any economic downturn happened. In addition, five days worker would be more prefered than four-day workers in the company because of this four-day workers have very little chance of getting promotion.
