IN the lecture, the professor explains that the methods given in the passage for the prediction of earthquake, though valid are based on no clear evidence of their efficacy. Hence, clearly showed that the methods mentioned in the passage are questionable and unreliable.
He mentions that an unusual change animal behaviour could be relied on in predicting earthquakes unlike what is described in the passage. While speaking, he disproves the reliability of the records like the one from 373 b.C. Greece, which states that various animals like rats, snakes and weasels left their dwellings several days before an earthquake. In doing this, he points out that the movement of the animals was probably as a result of a mild shaking. Moreover, minor trembling does cause sensory reactions which could lead to a change in environment.
Also, he dislodges the use of the occurence of headache for predicitng earthquaks. He mentions headache occurece is the rearest pointer to the occurence of an earthquake. This is because the amount of of Magnetite in the human brain as described in the passage is too small to trigger the amount of sensitivity in humans needed to accurately predict an earthquake. Additionally, he points out that not everyone would be senesitive enough to develop an headache in the case of an incumbent earthquake.
Finally, he also downplays the measurement of radon emission in predicting earthquake. He does this by pointing out that radon emission could be as a result of activities other than earthquakes in the earth crust. Such activities include land slides and crushing rocks. Therefore, since other factors could influence its emmision, a high concentration of radon in an environment is not a reliable indicator for predicting earthquakes.
