We are witnessing a very large hype regarding the colonization of Mars. But we should actually colonize Saturns' moon Titan, if we are willing to start the colonization of our solar system. Setting up a colony on Titan would be much easier and there we would have access to more resources.
First off let's talk about the characteristics of Titan which make it more suitable for human colonization. The atmospheric pressures of Titan and of Earth are pretty much the same, whereas on Mars there is almost no atmospheric pressure. Mars has 1% of density of the Earths' atmosphere. We can also find more resources on Titan, for example methane. There are literal lakes and rivers of methane on Titan which can be used for propulsion.
Titans' gravity is lower, which makes it easier to land, and take off, from this celestial body. More than 90% of rocket fuel is spent on take offs and landings. So a lower gravity goes a long way towards making space travel easier. Mars has twice as much gravity as Titan. This would require us to carry much more fuel, which will require from us to make bigger rockets.
Titan is further away from Earth, but since a small proportion of rocket fuel needs to be spent in the vacuum of space, we can certainly say that this distance will be of less importance. This might sound counter-intuitive, but the fact that Titan is more distant from us than Mars is, will be of no consequence.
The reading and passage are both about the idea of colonization on Mars or Titan. The author of the reading feels that it would be a much easier job to colonize in Titan as it will also come with the benefit of its abundant resources. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that even though Titan has its resources Mars will be a better option to colonize as it is closer to the Sun hence it is warmer.
To begin with, the author argues that the atmospheric pressure of Titan is similar to that of Earth and Mars has a negligible amount when compared. The passage also mentions the rivers and lakes of methane which can be used o transverse through the jet. The specific argument is challlenged by e lecturer. He claims that astronauts still need space suit to travel in the atmosphere either of Mars or Titan due to oxygen scarcity. Hence, there is little importance of atmospheric pressure being the same. Additionally, he also mentions that Mars has more water than Titan which is an important resource for us humans.
Secondly. the writer suggests that less fuel will be used to take off and land on Titan, as its gravitational pull is lower. Since Mars has twice than Titan it will require much more rocket fuel and bigger rockets eventually. The professor, however, rebuts this by mentioning that lower gravity comes with its flaws where several astronauts have found drop in their heart rates, resulting to earlier deaths.
Finally, the author posits that even though Titan is further away from Earth the overall fuel to cover the distance and to take off and land on Titan is much lesser than on Mars, and hence distance here is of very little importance. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that distance requires our attention as farther distance means it will take a longer time to communicate via Earth. He also notest a greater distance to cover would take much more time to send food and supplies, creating further problems in logistics.
