The passage discusses about the adverse effects of aquamarine agriculture and using ocean floors for resources by citing some consequences which will be faced by exploiting the oceans for resources. However, the lecturer rebuts the claim and feels that there will be minimal impact on environment.
To begin with, the author in the passage states that, to search for the resources in oceans there will be tearing apart of oceans as there is no adequate information or evidence about where exactly the resources can be found. This will impact adversely on sea life. To oppose this point, the lecturer explains the process of how the resources are going to be discovered without affecting wide area of the oceans. Lecturer explains that to find the sources, they don't need to destroy the wide area and only small part of the ocean will be detected where the rich concentration of resources are found.
Furthermore, the passage states that lots of sand and dust will pollute the water. Also, poisonous gas and waste product will affect the sea water and sea currents will carry these harmful substances over the world. It can affect animals up-to 1000m depth. To oppose this point, lecturer tells that, disruption will take place only in small amount and that too near deserts. Als, he says that the plants like phytoplankton which are at the bottom of food pyramid will be affected mostly. So, this will not possess a major problem. He also says that the circulation will be only within few 1000 miles and that won't be perilous for aquatic life and plants as well.
Finally, the author claims in the passage that there will be destruction with when aquamarine agriculture is carried out. This he supports by the example of fishes like tuna and salmon by stating that they will be restricted to a small place to grow and fed. Doing so will cause their waste material in small area where they are present. This will affect the surrounding as well. However, author claims that, even if there is some harm to aquatic life, aquamarine agriculture is the need of an hour. Appetites are increasing, world population is outpacing the supply of traditional agriculture. So, it is necessary to use oceans for producing enough food. This won’t affect fish and marine life too as is going to near desert area where there are less umber of fishes.
So, to sum up the points in lecture and passage, lecture states that aquamarine agriculture is curse for the society stating various reasons like adverse impact on sea life, aquatic life in danger, poisonous gases in water bodies and etc. However, the lecturer feels the opposite, he explains the need of an aquamarine agriculture and gives example to support that it is not as dangerous as it is given in passage and moreover all the circumstances can be mitigated.
