Essay topics:

Claim: It is no longer possible for a society to regard any living man or woman as a hero.
Reason: The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

A hero is defined as an individual who has succeeded in finding a solution to a significant dilemma that affects a large group of people. This definition is dependent on the condition that the efforts of the individual are made public to the affected group of people. Based on this definition, the criteria to characterize an individual as a hero is entirely subjective, varying based on the different possible perspectives. While it is possible to consider an individual a hero, keeping that title is the challenge that many figures over the course of history have faced. The scrutiny a public figure might face can diminish their reputation. Their history and future become available to all who are interested to learn about it, and the pressure of maintaining their heroic persona can eventually lead to their reputation's downfall.

To start, many cases throughout history have shown that individuals that appeared to start out as heroes eventually succumbed to the attention of the media to their personal lives and past choices. Many Egyptians were fooled by the hero act performed by their former leader, President Mursi. He enticed many citizens living in rural areas with gifts and promises of support in their farms and small businesses in exchange for votes. This clear bribery appeared at first to be a heroic act to those individuals in need, with President Mursi solving all of their problems instantly. The alleged kindness he displayed was only a facade that quickly faded after he assumed office and started making decisions against the best interest of Egypt and its citizens, in his quest to greatness. Former Egyptian President Mursi's deceptive hero act was quickly scrutinized and exposed by the Egyptian media, and the consequences that followed cost him his position and reputation, not to mention his country's stability.

Furthermore, a recent notable example of another leader scrambling to maintain their fragile image as the Democratic women's hero is the United States' Vice President Kamala Harris, who's campaign started out with her at the forefront of empowering American woman, but the pressure of maintaining that image, as well as the heavy scrutiny of Republican media resulted in the decline of her popularity as a presidential candidate. While she attempted to appear confident in her potential for winning office, the reality was that her attitude in the media was viewed as controlling and dismissive of Americans' concerns. She failed to live up to the hero image she aimed to fulfil, turning herself into an inattentive presidential candidate who appears to value her opinions over her consistuents' concerns. In other words, in her attempt to remain the hero, she inadvertently became the villain.

The ultimate challenge for any hero is to withstand the test of time, and remain a hero despite the attempts of media and even journalists to twist their image. While no individual is perfect, those under the scrutiny of the public must aim and achieve perfection, as well as maintain it, with great care to craft their image of their past, present and future. With these difficult standards, it's hard to imagine anyone can be considered a hero for more than a moment in time.
