Nowadays, some parents put a lot of pressure on their children to succeed. What are parents’ reasons for doing this? Is this positive or negative development for the children?
Behind the success of children now is not only their intrinsic motivations but also a great deal of pressure caused by their parents. This essay will delve into the reasons for this parental action, before explaining my belief that it is a net positive.
The fact that parents nudge their children towards success stems simply from love. They take pride in their children's accomplishments, whether in professional careers, academia or personal lives. For example, many parents feel vicarious joy when their offspring earn a lucrative remuneration and are well-respected in their lines of work. Others feel contagious happiness when their daughter or son manages to gain admission to a prestigious university or gets happily married to a suitable partner. Children's professional, academic and personal success, in essence, brings to parents a sense of reassurance, since their children are independent and mature to a point that they can act without parental guidance and supervision.
However, some opponents of this development point to cases where this love becomes so extreme that parents start to dictate how their children should live. This results in their loss of personal freedom. Worse still, children can inadvertently become a means through which parents realize their unfulfilled dreams. There have been several instances where children are deprived of their right to choose their favorite subjects or hobbies, all under the excuse of "It is not good for you", which is a disguise of authoritarianism.
Notwithstanding the validity of the aforementioned arguments, I believe these cases represent just a minority. Parental pressure is crucial to orientate children out of laziness and procrastination, while it also provides the necessary push when children lose their intrinsic motivations and experience moments of despair. Research has also proven that there is a positive correlation between success and discipline - a factor which can be cultivated by parents' strictness. Due to these reasons, a certain degree of pressure is wholly warranted to ensure children will not go astray.
In conclusion, the parental pressure currently levied on children is attributed to the sacred love that parents have for them, the pride in their achievements and a sense of reassurance. Although it is true that some parents take too extreme an approach which takes a toll on their children, a moderate level of pressure is reasonable to motivate and steer them towards the right path, as well as inculcating discipline.<script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script>
