Some people think that the main purpose of school is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit children as individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is widely believed that the primary role of education is to provide society with a competent workforce rather than value individual satisfaction. While I am in agreement with this idea, I also reckon that educating the young generation for their own sake is of paramount importance.
Undoubtedly, academic institutions have an indispensable role to play in delivering moral lessons and teaching disciplines to students. It is teachers who teach them to differentiate between right and wrong from an early age and turn them into model citizens who are law-abiding. Moreover, equipping young generations with academic knowledge has always been a fundamental role of the education system. They will be exposed to various aspects of life including history, geography, or even economy while sharpening relevant skills acquired from participating in group projects, such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. With deeper insights into the surrounding world and hands-on experience, it is highly likely that they become more flexible and adaptable to new and complex working environments.
Having said that, personal development should not be overlooked. Apart from providing knowledge, schools should place equal emphasis on cultivating learners’ emotional intelligence and promoting natural abilities. In other words, this is an environment where they learn how to express themselves and establish new social connections. Simultaneously, schools could discover learners’ potential and encourage them to pursue their true passions involving sports or art. In this regard, education helps perfect students by developing their strengths and overcoming their weaknesses.
All things considered, the educational system should be regarded as an institution that is responsible for training ythe oung generation to contribute to the development of the country while fostering their talents, ensuring sustainable progression.
