The reading claims that there is a kind of freshwater shellfish named zebra mussel, and they are spreading out in a way that is not controllable and this invasion is continuing. Contrary to what is argued in the reading passage, the lecturer illustrates that this hypothesis is not convincing, and he provides more detail and examples to refute all the points made by the reading.
The first reason made by the reading is that this spread cannot be stopped. However, the lecturer asserts that it might be unstoppable in the past because of lack of knowledge, but we can stop it now. For instance, we know that they are mainly spreading out by the ships, so if these ships start to empty out the in the ocean, the shellfishes will be in the ocean and the salty water can kill them.
Secondly, the reading claims that zebra mussels are able to be dominated in new habitats because they will not have any predators there. However, the lecturer states that in Europe, maybe at first there will be no predator for them, but after a while, birds will notice them as a new source of food that is available and since birds can actually eat a lot, they may not end up being dominated after all.
Lastly, the reading passage states that zebra mussels will cause a reduction in fish population since they can be assumed as competitions in food sources. Once again the lecturer casts doubt on this idea, and he says that they can compete with the fishes whose food is planktons, and they may cause them to be reduced in numbers, however, they can have a positive effects on the fish species whose food is the silt and sludge from the bottom of the lake or river, since they make some nutrients that are beneficial for them.
