Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The author casts doubt about the authenticity of Palean baskets. The author does not support this argument with proper evidences. He makes few assumptions and concludes that Palean baskets are not unique.
Previously, pre-historians believed that a particular pattern was distinctively found only in proximity of the village not elsewhere. This statement is not supported with any proofs such as any surveys or statistics made by archeologists at other villages for that particular pattern at that time. The Palean basket pattern claim seems to be an assumption.
Recently the particular pattern seems to be discovered by archeologists in Lithos an ancient village across river Brim from Palea village. The river seems to be broad and deep the paleans could not have crossed without boat.Lithos is an ancient village which existed when Plae also exisited but the river existed at that particular time is not known and even if the river existed, the river may not be deep and broad like now. So the Paleans or the Lithos could have walked on the river since it was not deep or there was no river at all before.
Since boats have not found the basket pattern does not have to loose authenticity of being Paleans. Like now the river brim might have been deep and broad and the Plaens or Lithos might have used boats or other modes of transportation like animals which might be degenerated or destroyed overtime might not be available for study as proof.
The argument could be made strong with evidences like palean baskets uniqueness was made based on what criteria. The existence of Brim River and its depth in ancient time when Palea and Lithos village existed and modes of transportation they used.
