TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading claims that the writer Chevalier distorted many events in his memior to make his life seem more exciting. However, the lecturer casts doubt on what is presented in the text and refuses every of the reason given in the reading.
First of all, the lecturer claims that even though Chevalier borrowed sums of money, but this does not mean that he was poor. He used to spent large amount of money in parties and gambling. It might also happen that he first sell the things to get money which took time to convert it into money, so he needed to borrow money from someone else. This refutes the passage claim that Chevalier was not wealthy so he needed to borrow money.
Secondly, the lecturer contends that he wrote everything he remembered from his and Voltaire conversations. These conversations were held many years back so it is not possible to remember each detail of the conversation. There are many witnesses who told that Chevalier regularly consulted his notes before writing the memoir. This refutes the passage claim that the conversations he mentioned in his memoir were not accurate.
Finally, the lecturer mentions that other prisoners in the had more powerful friends in the prison in Venice. They could have brided them to escape from the prison but it can not happen in case of Chevaliers. Old government documents are a proof of that soon after the escape of Chevalier, the sealing of the room in which hew was locked was repaired. This is not in agreement with the passage that Chevailer bribed the polotically well-connected friends to escape from the prison.
