Based on the reading a fossil skeleton of a dinosaur included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones discovered in China in 1996 which some paleontologist interpret the lines as evidence that this dinosaur had feathers. The author mentions three reasons that critics provide to oppose it. However, the professor explains that none of the reasons were true and refute each of the author's reasons.
First, some critics point out these lines may be formed by decomposition of dead dinosaurs body into fibers. In contrast, the professor demonstrates that we do not see the fine lines in any other fossils. So by taking to account the condition which these fossils preserved, these lines are presenting feather.
Second, the passage mentions that even if the fine lines are real structures of Sinosauropteryx, they may represent frills, not feather. Nevertheless, the professor illustrates that feather and frills have different chemical instructions so we can analyze the chemical properties of fine lines and get the answer.
Finally, the article pointed out that feathers have functions like flight and thermoregulation, but the fine lines are located along the backbone and the tail of the animal which make the feather useless for these functions. The professor opposes this point by saying that feathers have some other functions such as attracting a mate.
