The maps illustrate the transformation of the town of Harborne from 1936 to 2007. Overall, as can be clearly seen, Harborne turned from a small undeveloped agricultural town to a thriving modern developed one.
In 1936, Harborne had only a few structures. In addition to two terraces of public facilities in the central area, there existed only a building of Government Offices in the south-east, near a huge farmland. Apart from that, the landscape was mostly barren, with some trees in the north-west, a river in the north-east and a winding cycle path in the south-west.
However, by 2007, many changes had occurred, making the town become much more convenient with many amenities. First of all, in the north-west, trees had been chopped down by two-thirds, the small cycle path in the south-west was widened to a curved beautiful road. Moreover, in the central area, a new shopping centre was erected in the middle, surrounded by other public facilities. While the post office, the bank and the library were kept unchanged, the flower shop was converted to a travel agent, the sweet shop and butchers were merged into a new supermarket. Other notable developments included a modern residential area built by the old river, a golf course replacing the farmland next to the museum that used to be the government offices.
