The graph below shows relative price changes for fresh fruits and
vegetables, sugars and sweets, and carbonated drinks between 1978 and
2009.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features,
and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph illustrates changes in price of three different food product groups in the USA over the course of 30 years, starting form 1979. It also shows the overall trend of the consumer price index during this period.

Overall, it is obvious that the prices of all food product groups increased over the period of 30 years. Although those trends were similar in terms of general increase, only the increase in price for fresh fruits and vegetables was significantly higher than the rise in the consumer price index.

In 1979, the prices of all product groups stood at the same figure. Over the period shown, the consumer price index rose steadily from approximately 70 in 1979 to over 200 in 2009. Prices for sugar and sweets and carbonated drinks also experienced similar upward trends. However, those prices were consistently below the consumer price index after 1987. After some minor fluctuations, price for sugar and sweets reached its peak at exactly 200 in 2009, slightly higher than the final figure for carbonated drinks at roughly 150.

Prices for fresh fruits and vegetables varied more than other figures. The figure dropped to below the consumer price index, at only 80 in 1984. Prices rose sharply to about 340 in 2008 and finished at roughly 330 in 2009, after experiencing a gradual decline throughout the remainder of the period.
