The passage and the lecture discuss whether cloud seeding, a method of reducing hail, would be effective in protecting crops from hail or not. The author of the reading passage presents three reasons to claim that cloud seeding is a practical method. However, the lecturer believes none of the reasons could strongly ascertain the usefulness of the cloud seeding method.
The author argues that experiments in the laboratory show that by using cloud seeding method light snow forms instead of hail. The lecturer argues against this reason and believes that the laboratory conditions do not represent real-life conditions. Moreover, cloud seeding method can affect all the precipitation forms such as; rain, snow, and hail. Additionally, the method can cause drought in the areas in which it has been used. Consequently, the cloud seeding method is impractical in real-life conditions.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that some Asian countries have successfully used the cloud seeding method in urban areas. Nevertheless, the lecturer illustrates that success of cloud seeding method in cities does not mean it will work in the urban areas. Moreover, the pollution in the cities makes favorable conditions for the method. Besides, the weather condition in the areas of the United States which this method is going to be used is not favorable. As a result, this claim does not possess a strong support to be acceptable.
Finally, the reading asserts that some local studies show that crop damage caused by hail was reduced in a farming region in the central United States. The lecturer opposes this point by explaining that this phenomenon happened to the neighboring area as well. Accordingly, this could be the result of a natural weather variation instead of cloud seeding method.
