The reading and the lecture are both about effects of reading literature can stimulates intellectual thinking. The author of the reading believes that result of the decline in reading literature can affect the culture in general and the future of literature. However, the lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that there has been drop in number of people reading books specially on literature, thus, the intellectual thinking is not being utilized. The author explains that the purpose of reading literature are to widen our imagination and expand knowledge in language and culture. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that it is not true that in order to attain intellectual stimulation one must read books like novel, but he stresses that reading book of that is of high quality, well written like science, history, political science can also a good source of sharpening ones mind.
Secondly, the author contends that many people are interested in reading self help books instead of literature, whereas, it is know to be poorly written and intellectually is not challenging. The article notes that majority of people invest their time in watching programs on the television, watching music video, or surfing the internet and spending less on reading literature which can lead to declining in level of culture. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the culture does not change even if they will listen to music, music videos or spend most of their time on the internet. He elaborates on this by mentioning that culture change all the time, thus, creation of new form to the standards of contemporary content.
Finally, the author states that talented writers are not being acknowledge today. The article establishes that publishing companies spend less of their money on literature, hence, small number of writers are are pursuing to write good quality of books, so, the materials being circulated in the market is of poor standards. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is the fault of the author why the literature today is of below standards. He puts forth the idea that modern literature is difficult to understand compared to older ones. Additionally, early people would not be interested in reading today's literature and vice versa.
