In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership
How long should an enterprise to change its chief executive, or how long should a country change their president? The statement gives an absolute answer, 5 years, and the statement reasons that the revitalization caused by new leadership is the key to success. While, in my view, both reasons and claims are too absolute. Though most western governments change president in 5 years, business leader often stay longer time to keep the company stable.
In modern society, most government has a restricted period of time in those powerful positions. It is a big improvement compare to ancient times since it ensures fairness and democracy of our society. For example, in ancient china, the emperor governs the nation all his life, and when he died, the kingship would be inherited by her son or other family member. Under such long time autocracy, many cruel kings emerged. Such as Qin Shi Huang, an emperor who order to bury the scholar alive and burn books to fool his people, and finally leads to the subversion of Qin dynasty.
Though powerful position in government should be altered in several years to avoid over-lasting autocracy, business leader has not need to mimic. First, outstanding leadership is not the surest path to success as the statement suggest. Many other factors influence the success of an enterprise, such as skills of employee, cooperation, management style, and innovation. For instance, while Steve Jobs owns lots of credits of the success of Apple, it is the employees who truly realize the amazing product. And Google also said their talented employees are real fortunes of the company.
Second, substituting leader frequently might harm the company, because new leadership often accompanies a new management style, new company policy, and thus makes some senior management lose their power because they may have same interests with old leader. Such movement may consume lots of money and leads many unstable factors in the company which most company can’t afford. Moreover, most new leaders are younger generations. Though they may bring some fresh air to the company, the veteran leaders is more experienced and live through more mistakes before.
