The graph describes the amount of goods brought into UK by rail, water, road and pipeline route between 1974 and 2002. During this period, highest amount of goods were transported into the country by road.
As can be seen clearly, around 70 million tonnes of goods were transported through road in 1974, which was also highest quantity to be carried amongst all the different routes. This figure rose to 80 million tonnes in period between 1990 to 1998. By year 2002, close to 100 million tonnes of goods was transported by roads.
On the other hand, nearly 40 million tonnes of goods were transported by water and rail routes in 1974. This quantity remained same by 2002, except for a drop in 1986 and 1994, when only 30 million tonnes was transported. As opposed to that, the water route was used increasingly to transport goods, with load rising to close to 60 million tonnes in 1982 and 1994. However, the quantity fell to 50 million tonnes in 1998, before rising over 60 million tonnes in 2002. Similarly, the pipeline route also saw a steady rise in its preference, carrying 20 million tonnes in year 2002. But despite the increase, it remained the least favoured route throughout the 28 year period.
In conclusion, roads continued to carry maximum quantity of goods into UK, whereas, pipelines were preferred rarely as a mode of transport.
