The reading and the lecture discuss the decline of Yellow Cedar from different perspectives. The lecture seems to negate all the claims made in the article. The lecture says people still do not know why the Yellow Cedar reduce significantly and none of those reasons that the article has mentioned are convincing.
First of all, the article points out that insects, particularly Bark Beetles eradicate the Yellow Cedar. This point is challenged by the lecture. The lecture restates the fact that healthy Yellow Cedar are bigger than the bark beetles. Moreover, the leaves of Yellow Cedar contain chemical poison, which are able to resistant insects and bark beetles. Therefore, the bark beetles cannot kill the Yellow Cedar.
Secondly, the article contends that brown bear can be the cause of the decline of the Yellow Cedar. The lecture rebuts this argument by saying that the populations of the Yellow Cedars are destroyed in many places, including England and Island. Meanwhile, these locations have no bear. As a result, bear cannot be a reason to reduce the Yellow Cedar.
Finally, the article states that the root of the Yellow Cedar suffer from the changes of climate. It is noted that the Yellow Cedar's root is sensitive, thus it would be frozen by cold weather. The lecture, on the other hand, opposes this point by arguing that if other trees also suffer from freezing climate, it will be true for the circumstance of the Yellow Cedar. However, there are more trees die in warm weather than in cold weather. Therefore, the reason that the Yellow Cedar destroyed by cold weather is unconvincing.
