Both the reading and the lecture discuss about how the decreasing numbers of Torreya taxifolia tree can be controlled. While the text gives three ways that can be employed to check this decline, the author repudiated each of the claims and believes that none of it is likely to work.
First, the passage states that reestablishing Torreya in northern Florida can be a good idea due to its comparatively cooler and wetter microclimate. In contrary, the lecturer contends that the tree decline is impacted by the weather change on a large scale due to problems of Globalization and drying out of wetlands.
Besides this, the reading suggest that growing Torreya in a different region might suit the tree. The professor again refutes this by mentioning that this might have adverse affects to the ecology of the new environment. She gives example of a tree called Black Locust which was introduced similar way to a different environment and that resulted in killing of other trees due to quick spread of the introduced tree.
Finally, the reading suggest that the tree can also be saved from extinction by growing it in research centers. However, the lecturer opposes it by arguing that trees need genetic diversity and large area for their growth which would not be the case with the research centers.
To summarize, there is a clear disparity between the arguments put forth by the passage and the listening and a significant amount of evidence support that professor stated more legitimate and tangible factors which the passage fails to justify.
