burning mirror which is a kind of weapon using by Syracuse people
Both lecture and passage discuss about burning mirror which is a kind of weapon using by Syracuse people according to some historians. The text reasons that this was a myth and gives some resons. But the professor refutes the reasons and state that the Greek really used the burning mirror.
First off, the the author posits that at that time, Greek had not the advanced technology to make such a sophisticated weapon especially because such a mirror must be very large and with a precise geometric shape. On the contrary the lectures specifies that the mirror could be made up of thousands pieces of small copper block. She clarifies that an experiment proves that we could build such a mirror and with exact parabolic curvature using many small pieces of metal.
Secondly, the writer makes the point that using this kind of mirror to set the ships alight, needs about ten minutes for focusing the sun rays directly on a point and gives an examples by mentioning an experiment that showed at least ten minutes is needed to set an object on fire. In contrast, the speaker postulates that the object mentioned in text in a piece of wood and there was some material in Roman ships that needed much less time to set alight. She examplifies pitch that is a sticky substance that was used to water proof the ships and explain this substances needs just several seconds to be alight by using burning mirrors.
Finally the text points out that the Greeks did not need use burning mirror. Because they could use flaming arrows to set the enemies ships on fire. Conversely the speaker states that Romans knew this kind of arrows, But they could not see the sun rays. The y only could see the mirrors and all of a sudden some part of their ship set on fire.
All in all the lecture casts doubt on the pints that presented in the article about using burning mirrors by Greeks.
